Wax Ball ASMR: Squishy, Pop It

A Seoul toy street, in your pocket.

■ It doesn't crack on the first press
The thin paraffin shell resists your finger. You press, hairline cracks spread, and then all at once it gives — the shell splits and the clay underneath squashes. There are three sounds: the first sharp crack, the crumble of small flakes, and the wet squish of the clay.

The broken pieces don't disappear. They stay buried in the clay, and you can keep kneading it.

■ Don't throw it away — re-wax it
A real wax ball is over the moment you break it. This one isn't. At the workbench you re-coat the same clay, dents and buried shards and all, and crack it again. Each coat is tougher, breaks into smaller pieces and rings higher.

■ You don't know what's inside until you break it
Clay, an egg, a handful of tiny wax balls — and sometimes another wax ball.

■ Squishies keep the dent
A slime-filled one holds the mark forever, a silicone aubergine stretches, a jelly snaps perfectly back.

■ Pop It — push, then flip it over

■ Workbench — mix your own
Shell thickness, chilling, parts, filling. Your mix becomes a 5-character recipe code; send it to a friend and they can build the same ball and break it.

■ Every sound is synthesised live
Nothing here is a recording. The crack is built out of dozens of tiny fractures at the moment it happens, so the same sound never plays twice. Headphones help.
