Can't even register a new account

The actual app is great and extremely thorough. But there's one big problem I can't get past (and it's not the cost). You can't log in because the ad for upgrades stops you. I try to cancel, but it won't take me away from that screen without trying to get me to register and/or upgrade. How can I use it if I can't even get in?
