Screen Time Tracker

Screen Time Tracker is a digital wellbeing app developed as part of a Harvard Business School (HBS) research study on social media and technology use. Currently, the app is being used by study participants in Senegal.

The app allows you to monitor how much time you spend on each app on your device and set personalized daily limits. When you reach an app's limit, an intervention screen appears to help you become more mindful of your usage.

Research Context

This app is part of a Harvard Business School academic study investigating the effects of social media use. Usage data is collected solely for research purposes and is handled in accordance with the university's ethical protocols.

Your data is yours.

All usage information is stored on your device. Screen Time Tracker does NOT share or sell your data to third parties for commercial purposes. No passwords, financial data, or message content are collected.

Required permissions:

• Access to usage statistics: Required to see how much time you've spent using each app throughout the day.

• Accessibility Service: Screen Time Tracker uses the AccessibilityService API exclusively to detect when an app is opened in the foreground. This allows us to compare actual usage time with your configured daily limits and, when a limit is exceeded, display the intervention screen. The service only monitors window changes (TYPE_WINDOW_STATE_CHANGED) to identify the active app. It is NOT used to collect personal data, passwords, financial information, message content, or any other sensitive data.
