The practice was founded in 1947 by the late Terence Patrick Connaughton after his return from active service in the Second World War. In 1964 Terence was joined by Derek John Miller as Partner and later Alwyn Voyle Smith in 1968.

Since 2016, the Company comprises of 4 Partners, Stephen Charles Smith (Son of Late Alwyn Smith); Darryl Malcolm, Karen Metzger and Elmari Swart as CEO Accounting Services.

Connaughton Miller Smith has an active staff compliment of SAICA and SAIPA members.
