Last Haven: Survival Cards

The world ended. Your settlement did not — not while you are the one deciding for it.

All that is left of the town is a wall and what it holds: a well, a field, a hundred people. You are the fifth head in four years. The four before you are remembered for how it ended.

They come to you one at a time, each with a trouble of their own. There are always two answers: swipe left or swipe right. Give the last water to the sick, or keep the reserve for everyone. Let the strangers in, or bar the gate for good. This is a survival card game with no right answers — only consequences, and they arrive.

FOUR METERS, NONE TO SPARE
Water, people, spirit and defense. Hand out water and the stores drop, raise the walls and the people wear thin, punish the guilty and the spirit falters. Let any meter hit zero and the settlement is gone. The whole game is holding all four at once.

TEN YEARS IS ONLY THE FIRST ROUND
You have to last ten years. Whoever gets there finds a second decade behind the first, and a third behind that, and learns that a settlement carries its exhaustion from one round into the next. Few have seen the endings Twenty Years and Thirty Years.

OVER FIFTEEN HUNDRED EVENTS
Drought and first snow, a birth and a burial, a neighbour informing on a neighbour, a stranger caravan on the horizon, a child who found something alive in the ruins. Every card is written, not assembled from templates, and a single run through this post-apocalyptic world shows you a small part of them.

ELEVEN WAYS TO RULE
Sooner or later the settlement demands a course: commune, monarchy, theocracy, military rule, technocracy, corporation, eco-village, isolation. Each way of ruling has its own deck of events, its own troubles and its own endings you cannot reach any other way.

NINE DISASTERS
Drought, fire, flood, plague, winter, newcomers, a trial, the state. Each arrives as its own act and breaks the ordinary run of the day. And sometimes an apocalypse happens inside the apocalypse, and the dead come to the gate.

THE SETTLEMENT REMEMBERS
Execute the prisoner and the gravedigger remembers, the market remembers, two of your guards ask for a different shift. Nineteen people carry stories that grow across a run: a boy with a stray dog becomes the man who argues with you as an equal — or does not, because of an answer you gave years ago.

THIRTY-NINE ENDINGS
Golden Age. Water Empire. Fortress on Bones. Lonely Guardian. A List of Names. Collected one at a time, and the ones you never aimed for are the ones that stay.

TWELVE BEGINNINGS
A run starts differently every time: an empty depot, a fire, children in your arms, a community already split in two. And two days away lie the ruins of the settlement you played last — with the well you let run dry.
