Open and decentralized file synchronization - A Wrapper for Syncthing

Features & Capabilities

Syncthing-Fork is an open-source Android wrapper for Syncthing that replaces cloud services with decentralized, peer-to-peer file synchronization. It offers a native Android UI (instead of Syncthing’s Web UI), per-folder and per-device sync rules, SD card write support on Android 11+, and optional private camera-sharing (Syncthing Camera). The fork focuses on frequent, configurable enhancements and clearer UI feedback—showing folder/device progress, recent changes, discovery of local devices, and fixes for battery-impacting behavior.

Important: this release upgrades the Syncthing submodule to v2 and performs a one-time database migration. Do not close or force-stop the app during the first launch after updating; back up your data and export the app configuration before upgrading. The project is hosted on GitHub with source, issue tracker, and documentation for SD-card access, wiki, and translations.

User Reviews

Syncthing-Fork is a strong, cloud-free sync tool praised for reliable cross-device syncing, easy setup, and good Obsidian.md integration. Users report fast, background transfers across Android devices, NAS, and desktops, with clear transfer progress shown in notifications. Common caveats are battery drain, restrictive folder/path handling (no external directories and risky default folder creation), occasional sync-status glitches, background stability issues, and lack of SD-card write support. Overall it's a capable local-first solution with broad multi-device adoption, but power use and reliability caveats should be kept in mind.
Pros
  • Excellent cross-device syncing across Android devices, NAS, and desktops with background transfers.
  • Free/local-first syncing with no reliance on cloud storage.
  • Strong Obsidian.md integration for cross-device note syncing.
  • Easy setup with clear transfer progress visible via notifications.
  • Broad multi-device support and reliable performance in many use cases.
Cons
  • Significant battery drain on many devices.
  • Folder/path handling is restrictive and risky (no external directories; default folder creation can cause data loss).
  • Sync status can be inconsistent or misreported (e.g., showing up-to-date or conflicts incorrectly).
  • Background stability issues (app can be killed or crash; may require manual restarts or automation).
  • Lack of SD-card write support on some devices.

It eats so much more battery than the official one... And on android 13 lenovo tablets it completely crashes at startup, its impossible to use. Happens both with new or saved configs
