EOS Calculator

Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of global mortality in children younger than 5 years. Prompt diagnosis and treatment of early-onset sepsis (EOS) are curial. There are suggestions of a substantial overtreatment of antibiotics, resulting in an unnecessary disturbance of microbial flora. The Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Calculator developed by Kaiser Permanente1 provides clinicians with risk estimates based on maternal risk factors and objective neonatal clinical findings. Implementation the EOS Calculator was associated with a 44% decrease in empiric antibiotic use for suspected EOS2. However, the EOS Calculator has not been validated yet in the Netherlands. There a Dutch variant of the EOS Calculator is developed and will be evaluated in the EOS Calculator study.
