Wichita Area Travel Survey

The Wichita Area Travel Survey App is used to support household travel surveys conducted throughout the region. Participation is by invitation only. Survey participants are members of randomly selected households that have agreed to take part in the study. Eligible household members (18 years of age or older, or 13 years of age or older with parental or guardian permission) are asked to download and install the app and log in using a unique PIN assigned to their household. After logging in, each participant selects their assigned name or nickname from a household member list to ensure that travel information is correctly attributed. Before using the app, participants provide contact information through an online or telephone survey. This information allows ETC Institute staff to contact participants if clarification is needed regarding their travel diary during or after the survey period. Once activated, the app automatically detects and records locations where participants stop during a designated travel survey period, typically 24 hours. At the end of the collection period, participants review their recorded stops, answer a brief set of questions about each location, and submit their completed travel diary directly through the app. To accurately identify stops and travel patterns, the app uses the device's location services (GPS). GPS data helps determine stop locations and generate an approximate travel route, making it easier for participants to review and verify their trips. With the participant's permission, the app may also access motion sensors, including the accelerometer and gyroscope. Information from these sensors helps the app confirm travel activity and improve the accuracy of stop detection. Data collected through the survey is used solely for research purposes and is handled in accordance with our privacy policies.
