Features & Capabilities

SmoothTrack: Head Tracker is a revolutionary Chrome extension that brings intuitive 3D head tracking to PC simulation games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Elite: Dangerous, and Euro Truck Simulator 2 without requiring any headset. Leveraging Google AR services, this extension uses your device's camera to track subtle head movements and control your in-game camera perspective seamlessly.

Compatible with any game supporting TrackIR or FreeTrack protocols, SmoothTrack enhances immersion by allowing users to lean forward to inspect their cockpit closely, shift their view to see overhead panels, or glance in the direction they are navigating. Its user-friendly setup and features like dark mode for battery saving and bright mode for low-light gaming environments make it an essential tool for sim enthusiasts. Responsive Discord and email support ensure a smooth experience and openness to feature requests.

User Reviews

SmoothTrack: Head Tracker is praised for its easy setup, affordability, and strong performance in flight simulators, providing a cost-effective alternative to TrackIR. Users appreciate the smooth, customizable tracking and compatibility with OpenTrack. However, common issues include occasional lag, limited camera options, reliance on Wi-Fi connectivity, occasional app instability when multitasking, and variable tracking accuracy on certain Android devices. Overall, it significantly enhances immersion but could benefit from improvements in camera selection, connection modes, and stability.
Pros
  • Easy and quick setup process with clear instructions.
  • Significantly enhances immersion and realism in flight simulators like MSFS2020 and DCS.
  • Cost-effective alternative to expensive head tracking hardware like TrackIR.
  • Smooth and responsive tracking performance with customizable sensitivity settings.
  • Works well with OpenTrack software, providing good compatibility and flexibility.
Cons
  • App experiences occasional lag or latency during tracking, causing a float or overshoot sensation.
  • Limited camera control; no option to switch to higher quality or rear camera, affecting tracking precision.
  • Connectivity issues, as it relies on Wi-Fi only without Bluetooth or USB tethering options, causing spotty connections for some users.
  • App may crash or show black screen when multitasking or switching apps, requiring restart.
  • Inconsistent tracking accuracy on some Android devices compared to iOS counterparts, leading to stuttering or unregistered movements.

I get a very small lag delay when moving my head around and the camera moving. There is a float sensation that makes me overshoot what I want to look at. Even playing around with the sliders, OpenTrack curves, sensitivity, deadzones, smoothing I just can't get it to feel right. The USB mode, which the setup feels super sketchy to run by the way, didn't make much of a difference. It works, I guess, but OpenTrack is free and had the same feeling I got with SmoothTrack so no gain for me.

App is not nearly as accurate on Android (Samsung Galaxy S20) as it is on iPhone (15 Pro). It would not register with me looking to the right (mirroring turned on) as well as it does to the left of the screen. It also would get stuck, stuttering in one spot and would have to close and restart the app. Unusable. However it works flawlessly on iPhone. Only using it on my Android because my iPhone is where I get notifications so I wanted to use the backup as a stationary head tracker.
