User reviews
Duolingo offers a fun, gamified environment ideal for beginners to build vocabulary and practice basic language skills. The interface is user-friendly and lessons are engaging. However, many users find the frequent ads, limited mistake allowances, and push towards a paid subscription frustrating. Speaking exercises suffer from bugs and poor feedback. Additionally, some AI-generated content can be inaccurate or repetitive, and the app lacks deep conversational practice. Overall, Duolingo is a helpful starting tool but requires supplementation and improvements to retain advanced learners.
Pros
- Fun and gamified approach to language learning that encourages consistent practice.
- Easy to use interface with visually appealing design and multiple methods of reinforcement (visual, auditory).
- Effective for vocabulary building and basic sentence formation.
- Suitable for beginners and as a supplementary tool alongside other learning methods.
- Free version provides enough content for basic learning and habit building.
Cons
- Frequent, intrusive ads and aggressive monetization pushing users towards paid subscription.
- Heart system limiting mistakes, making it frustrating and restricting lesson continuation without payment.
- Speaking and pronunciation features are buggy, with poor feedback and audio issues.
- AI-generated content sometimes results in grammatical errors and bizarre or repetitive phrases.
- Lack of conversational practice and insufficient feedback on pronunciation or comprehension.
Recent reviews
The interface is decent, though slightly difficult to navigate. Most of the exercises are helpful for pronunciation and vocabulary, but there isn't really any conversational practice. The speaking exercises are also finicky and seem to miss certain words consistently (like "Euro" in German) regardless of my audio setup or enunciation. Sometimes the point values also bug out, usually reducing rather than increasing my score. Fun app to use, but it needs some serious work.

I'm actually a little surprised with how popular this app is. I'm gonna guess it's because of Duolingo's presence on social media, because honestly, this isn't that good. It uses AI for it's lessons, which sometimes results in sentences that aren't even grammatically correct. Overall, I think this would be great for learning to READ a language, not speak it, since it doesn't do a good job at teaching accents (which are in almost every language).
