It makes a big deal about competing with others online, 4 player duels, etc., but it is not online unless you specifically select the globe for online play. It is actually totally offline, attempting to simulate online play with fake/snagged usernames and fake "matchmaking". this creates an environment that is able to play into social pressures without having to worry about real networking and social play.
