CalcRF

RF exposure: calculate levels, attenuation, and electric field strength

Features & Capabilities

CalcRF 3.0 is a technical calculator that allows you to:

. assess RF exposure levels generated by mobile base stations in simple scenarios,
. convert power density (mW/m²) into electric field strength (V/m) and vice versa,
. convert attenuation values in decibels to linear ratios and back,
.take into account the uncertainty of EXEM measurements (Case A). EXEM is a certified French laboratory that measures RF exposure levels in homes across France, under the supervision of the Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR),
. estimate the probability that a measured value below 6 V/m may actually hide a higher real exposure,
. verify consistency between DIM data and simulation reports (EIRP vs input power). The "DIM" is a technical document issued by mobile network operators and provided to municipalities prior to the installation of new antennas,
. compute EIRP from electrical power and antenna gain,
. calculate the root-sum-square of two electric fields,
. determine the equivalent EIRP for multiple telecom systems in a simplified scenario,
. compute the incident electric field on an antenna from the transmitted power,
. evaluate RF attenuation through different materials (as per ITU-R P.2040-3).

CalcRF includes 8 specialized modules.

Navigation:
. scroll vertically through each screen using the scrollbar on the right side,
. switch between modules using the navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen.

Exposure simulation:
. only direct waves between antennas and the calculation point are considered (no reflections or diffractions), in accordance with ANFR recommendations,
. if the tilts of 2G/3G/4G/5GDSS antennas are similar, an equivalent macro-antenna can be modeled by summing their EIRP values; the 5G 3500 MHz EIRP is typically provided in the municipal information file (DIM),
. the simulation module estimates exposure levels based on the distance to antennas (2G/3G/4G/5G). The calculation point must be located on the main axis of the fixed-beam antenna and in direct line-of-sight. A glass window can optionally be inserted in the signal path.

Useful resources: https://sites.google.com/view/cemethconseil
This site offers:
. explanations about RF exposure from mobile antennas,
. analysis of documents provided by operators to municipalities in France,
. a free online course on electromagnetic fields,
. simple tools to simulate exposure outside the main antenna beam.

As a graduate engineer from top French technical schools, I provide voluntary guidance to municipalities, associations, and individuals on all RF-related topics.
