Custom Maps lets you convert almost any map image into a GPS map that works completely offline. Compatible with phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, it supports map files in JPG, PNG, and PDF formats. This extension enables you to prepare navigation maps for parks or trails by using brochures, downloaded images, or pictures of paper maps before heading out. Simply select two reference points on your map and align them with locations on Google Maps for accurate positioning.

Privacy-focused, Custom Maps operates fully offline and does not collect or send personal data. It uses the Google Maps API anonymously for map alignment without transmitting user information. Open source and customizable, it also allows advanced users to annotate their maps externally before importing. This is a great little app to create a map from any image. I've used it for a few years now. Thank you Marko. All the bad reviews are from people that don't understand what the app does - they didn't read how to use it. The process is very simple. Of course the app needs your location. Hopefully this app becomes more popular and Marko increases functionality e.g., loading already georeferenced PDF and Geotiffs. Avenza was great but now enshitified. Custom Maps provides a decent workaround.
