WHAT IS AWD AND WHY IT MATTERS

Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a scientifically validated irrigation practice for paddy. Instead of keeping the
field continuously flooded, water is allowed to drop to a safe level before re-irrigating. Done correctly, AWD can:

• Reduce irrigation water use by 15 to 30 percent
• Lower pumping cost and electricity bills
• Reduce methane emissions from flooded paddy
• Maintain — and often improve — rice yield

The cultYvate AWD device automates the monitoring needed to do AWD reliably. The app puts that information in the
farmer's hand.

field is fitted with a cultYvate device — by cultYvate, a partner organisation, an FPO, a cooperative, or a
