User Reviews

Akebi offers strong offline performance with a compact footprint and a rich feature set (kanji breakdown, pitch accents, handwriting lookup, history, and Anki export). It’s praised for being beginner-friendly, free, and reliable across years of use. Common drawbacks center on handwriting input quality, a minor UI bug, and occasional compatibility/update concerns.
Pros
  • Offline capability with a very small app footprint
  • Powerful learning features: kanji breakdown, pitch accent, handwriting/drawing lookup, search history, and wildcards
  • Anki integration/export support for flashcards
  • User-friendly and beginner-friendly design with a simple layout
  • Free to use and commonly perceived as ad-free by users with long-term reliability
Cons
  • Handwriting/drawing input and recognition can be inconsistent or limited
  • Occasional UI bug where tapping a word briefly shows its info and then it disappears (requires a second tap)
  • Kanji drawing detection and recognition may not match dedicated apps in some cases
  • Some reviews note a lack of updates or compatibility with newer Android versions

Ridiculously good. Simple, but plenty of features when you look a little further. Love the detail on kanjis, where you can click the 3 dots and find a list of words that use the kanji, or a decomposition of the kanji into its components/radicals
