HGC Sophia

Sophia is the internal communication channel of Swiss Builders' Association SBV, known as HGC for short.



HGC was founded in 1899 by a handful of Zurich builders in what was then the industrial district of Zurich-Giesshübel. Over the past 125 years, it has developed into the most important building materials retailer and thus a mainstay of the Swiss construction industry. Today, HGC operates over 40 regional sales outlets for all types of building materials and almost 20 showrooms for ceramic and other wall and floor coverings throughout the country. Since the takeover of the Interstein Group, it has also become the largest natural stone dealer in Switzerland.



HGC, which is still organised as a cooperative and has around 3,000 members (mostly companies from the construction industry), currently employs around 1,000 people, including almost 100 apprentices. Every year, it uses its profits to support a number of industry associations and institutions in the Swiss construction sector, as well as young talent in the Swiss construction industry.
