Review summary

PhotoGuru Media Player is praised for its advanced photo and video slideshow features on Android TV devices with strong support for network and cloud storage. Users appreciate its customization, metadata display, and smooth playback including 4K. However, concerns exist over subscription pricing for core features, connectivity problems with some cloud services, a confusing user interface, and occasional sluggish performance. Some requested features like enhanced slideshow controls and file operations remain unaddressed, but overall it is considered a capable and unique app for advanced users.
Pros
  • Supports browsing and slideshow of photos and videos from various sources including local storage, network shares (SMB/WebDav), and cloud services like Dropbox and OneDrive.
  • Offers extensive customization options for slideshows, including duration, transitions, and ability to display advanced metadata like IPTC data.
  • Can handle various file formats correctly, including HEIC photos, vertical videos, and integrates well with Android TV devices such as Nvidia Shield.
  • Allows combining photos and videos in the same slideshow sequence, supporting 4K resolution and external media players.
  • Daydream/screensaver feature enables continuous slideshow playback on TVs and Android TV devices, providing an intuitive interface for this purpose.
Cons
  • Subscription model requiring payments for viewing own files or accessing multiple cloud accounts is unpopular and considered expensive by users.
  • Connectivity issues with some cloud services like Google Photos and Google Drive, as well as limited support for multiple accounts simultaneously, have been reported.
  • User interface is confusing, not intuitive, and wastes screen space; some find it difficult to navigate and less refined compared to alternatives.
  • Performance issues such as long loading times for network shares, buffering messages even with local files, and lack of smooth transitions reduce usability.
  • Missing features like better slideshow album ordering, folder operations on remote sources, image rotation for portrait videos, and pan/zoom inconsistencies limit user experience.

Cannot purchase stand alone functionality anymore, i already purchased the upnp now i want only the smb, but it is not possible anymore, instead i have to buy subscription. Edit : The solution given by the support team has helped me resolving my issue, and with this kind of support ( quick response, great solution ) they do deserve 5 stars !
