The IMO Standard Maritime Phrasebook (IMO SMP) is based on a basic knowledge of the English language. It has been specifically compiled as a simplified version of maritime English in order to reduce grammatical, lexical and idiomatic diversity to an acceptable minimum; using standard constructions to preserve the functional aspects of phrases, i.e. to avoid misunderstandings in oral communication on safety issues, thus pursuing the aim of reflecting the modern use of maritime English on board ships and in ship-to-shore/ship-to-ship communications.
