Review summary

Fool! is praised for its unique Shakespearean style, immersive and humorous narrative, and high replay value with diverse choices and inclusive character options. Players admire its engaging storyline and political intrigue. However, the elevated, archaic language can confuse some, leading to unintended choices. Multiple reviews note abrupt or unsatisfying endings and desire for better pacing or more fleshed-out interactions. Despite these issues, Fool! stands out as a top interactive novel with rich storytelling and creativity.
Pros
  • Engaging and captivating storyline with a unique Shakespearean and Middle English style.
  • High replay value due to diverse choices, branching storylines, and numerous endings.
  • Inclusive character options allowing players to choose gender identities and sexual orientations, adding romantic diversity.
  • Humorous and well-written narrative with clever jokes and immersive writing style.
  • Rich world-building with political intrigue and nuanced narration that deepens the experience.
Cons
  • The language is often elevated, archaic, or complex, making it difficult for some players to understand and choose correctly.
  • Endings can feel abrupt or unsatisfying, especially near the climax or after certain failures.
  • Lack of a save function between acts, which can be inconvenient for longer playthroughs.
  • Some players feel that the story pacing slows or that certain interactions could be more fleshed out.
  • Absence of family interactions after the initial part and limited character customization options.

I really like this story. The characters are rootable, there is enough choice diversity for replay value, and the style is rather charming. The one issue I have is that the pacing towards the end seems rushed. The endings feel abrupt.

i saw a comment about how the level of wording was too advanced and i thought "that sounds like a y o u problem", but now i see the issue. the plot and everything is good but if you don't have a smart brain that's able to interpret these sentences, you're going to end up picking a choice you didn't intend to. i'm an intelligent person but these words are just not it 😩

i've played a lot of choice games by these creators, but this is definitely one of my favourites!! you can choose to be male, female or non-binary and to be straight, gay, bi or ace. i love that. the storylines are captivating, playing this game over and over again is delightful.

I love how you included someone that was gender-neutral AND initially aromantic (demisexual? cupiosexual??) character as a "romanceable" option! It really adds a touch of romantic diversity to these Choice Games. Most of the options are straightforward and easy to navigate but due to the archaic style it's written in, it can be cryptic at times. Still, it was a riveting and whimsical tale nonetheless and money well spent(got it on sale) for something that occupied a good 9 hours of my free time!

One of the BEST! I have played around 50 of these choose your own adventure games, and this one ranks right at the top of my personal list. Great story too. I honestly have no complaints ( a rarity with me for games like this) but that it was too short, and at 400,ooo+ words that just shows how good it really is! I want more! Truly, BRAVO all around!

A delightful reading in the style of Shakespearean and intrigue of figuring out how to survive being a fool! There is a little bug when you are running away with the heir and eventually come back but King Saul mentioned several times like he never got assassinated.

Absolutely loved this game! I've played many text based story games now, and this has got to be in my top three. The constantly humorous writing throughout is very refreshing, I found the choices interesting and felt they really affected the story with plenty of ending options too. All in all very good and looking forward to playing again.

Fabulous foolery. Loved the use of humors and iambic pentameter for the royals. Ended a bit abruptly on my first playthrough when I failed a stat check, but on my second I managed to become the nation's top bard, so that was satisfying...

A novel concept carried to excellence through well thought out and engaging storylines and characters, and some of the most entertaining and immersive writing I've ever read in the choice of games series! It also contains an undertone of political intrigue so if that's your thing, definitely get this. Or even if it's not, the author provides ample wriggle room to just be the best fool that you can be!

Lots of replay value! I've played through anout 6 times now and had a significantly different story each time. The narrative voice is delightful, and it's even satisfying to have a character who's like. Very bad at fooling. Definitely worth the price.
