StarSense Explorer Android

StarSense Explorer

Use your phone's camera, gyro, and a Celestron telescope to see the universe!

Features & Capabilities

StarSense Explorer is a revolutionary Chrome extension that transforms your smartphone into a powerful guide for night sky exploration. Utilizing patent-pending sky recognition technology, this app works with a Celestron StarSense Explorer telescope (sold separately) to analyze star patterns overhead and calculate the telescope's position with pinpoint accuracy. It eliminates confusion for beginners and enhances experiences for seasoned astronomers by showing exactly where to point your telescope to view planets, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies.

Featuring an intuitive planetarium interface, StarSense Explorer offers a comprehensive celestial object database, automatic lists of the best stars and celestial phenomena visible from your location, and detailed scientific, historical, and mythological information including images and audio descriptions. The app connects easily with your telescope via a simple dock-and-launch setup, guiding you step-by-step to locate and observe your chosen objects. Most smartphones running Android 7.1.2+ are compatible, and the app supports multiple languages including French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Explore the universe effortlessly with StarSense Explorer—your night sky at your fingertips.

User Reviews

Overall, StarSense Explorer is praised for its object-finding ability and approachable setup when it works, but users consistently report reliability problems and device-specific compatibility issues. The top pain points are failing to locate or align the telescope, freezes or stalls during use, difficulty with camera lens selection, and setup fragmentation across multiple apps with poor documentation. When stable, the app provides fast, accurate targeting and strong hardware integration; otherwise, its usability drops significantly.
Pros
  • When it works, it makes locating celestial objects quick and accurate.
  • Easy to use with helpful onboarding and responsive customer support.
  • Supports multiple phone cameras and configurations, offering flexibility.
  • Strong integration with StarSense Explorer hardware and setups, delivering solid results for many users.
Cons
  • Repeated failures to locate or align the telescope; users report 'unable to locate telescope' and similar alignment problems.
  • Reliability issues: frequent freezes, stalling, and inconsistent localization during use.
  • Device compatibility problems, notably not working well on Pixel 9/9 Pro (not accurate or usable).
  • Camera lens handling issues: app sometimes defaults to the wide-angle lens or lacks camera-lens selection control.
  • Setup and documentation problems: confusing multi-app installation and poor documentation; updates can break features.

I have a strong appreciation for this app and also possess the company's contact number, as well as their telescope.

not useful. says my S20 phone is compatible but needs special tuning of camera to even setup. can't find stars at all even far from city on new moon night. clever idea but a waste of time....
