CanGuru

CanGuru turns screen time into something a child earns rather than something they are simply given. The parent sets the tasks and the rules in the CanGuru Family app; the child does the rest on their own phone.

HOW IT WORKS
1. The parent creates the child's profile in CanGuru Family and pairs the child's phone with a code.
2. The parent sets up tasks — chores, homework, routines — and how many coins each one is worth.
3. The child completes a task and marks it done, confirming it with a photo when the parent asked for proof.
4. The coins land in the child's wallet. The child decides what to do with them: turn them into extra screen time, or save them toward a goal.
5. Goals can be the child's own or shared by the whole family, and the child can chip in coins toward a family goal.

The child can also propose a task or a goal of their own, and ask their parent for extra time when they need it — the parent approves or declines from their phone.

SCREEN TIME AND LIMITS
The parent sets a daily screen time limit and a schedule — for example, quiet hours in the evening. The app shows the child how much time is left today. When the limit is reached, the apps the parent chose to control are closed and a block screen appears; earned coins can be spent to extend the time if the parent allows it.

MONITORING IS VISIBLE, NOT HIDDEN
CanGuru monitors app usage and screen time on the child's device, and it is built so the child can see that: its own icon on the home screen, a permanent notification stating that parental control is on, and a disclosure screen explaining what is collected before anything is enabled. CanGuru is not a spying or secret surveillance tool and must not be used to monitor anyone without their knowledge.

ACCESSIBILITY SERVICE
To detect which app is in the foreground and to show the block screen, the app uses Android's accessibility service. Consent is requested explicitly before it is enabled. The service reads only the name of the app currently on screen — never screen content, messages, passwords or anything typed. It can be turned off at any time in Android Settings.

WHAT IS COLLECTED
App usage time and app names, the list of installed apps, the device identifier and push token, crash and diagnostic data, and whatever the child submits themselves: proposed tasks and goals, requests for extra time, reflection notes, and photo proof of a completed task. This data is visible to the child's own parent and is never sold or shared with advertisers. Details: https://canguru.family/en/privacy
