Perlis, formally known as Perlis without Indera Kayangan, is the smallest state in Malaysia, and borders Thailand on the northwestern edge of Peninsular Malaysia with the state of Kedah to the south.

The capital of Perlis is Kangar, and the royal capital is Arau. In 2010, the state’s population was 227,025. The most famous tourist destination is Langkawi Island, linked to the mainland via a ferry terminal at the small village of Kuala Perlis. Padang Besar, at the Malaysia–Thailand border, is another important town.
