Wiktionary: English Dictionary

Lexica is an English dictionary built on a snapshot of Wiktionary (wiktionary.org), the free dictionary written and maintained by volunteers around the world. You get the depth of a full reference dictionary — senses, etymology, pronunciation, word relationships — in an interface built for fast, repeated lookups.

SEARCH THAT KEEPS UP WITH YOU
• Suggestions appear as you type, ranked by how closely they match — the closest matches stay solid while weaker ones fade back, so the best option is always the easiest to see.
• Choose how matching works: words that start with your text, words that contain it anywhere, or exact matches only.
• Tap a suggestion to open the full entry, with related words a tap away underneath.

EVERY PART OF THE ENTRY
• Numbered senses, including nested sub-senses, grouped by part of speech.
• Pronunciation with IPA and enPR notation, homophones and rhymes.
• Hear the word spoken — recorded audio where Wiktionary has it, with your device's text-to-speech as a fallback so every word can be played.
• Etymology, so you can see where a word came from.
• Synonyms, translations and topic labels.
• Derived terms, hyponyms and descendants for exploring the family around a word.

FOLLOW A WORD ANYWHERE IT LEADS
• Tap any linked word inside a definition to look it up instantly in a panel, without losing your place.
• Keep following links from one word to the next, then step back through them.
• Switch on "All details" in that panel to pull in the full entry.
• Long-press a definition to run it as a new search; tap to copy.

SAVE WHAT MATTERS
• Star any word to add it to Favourites.
• History records what you have looked up so you can return to it later.
• Both store the full entry, not just the word — so saved words and past searches stay readable with no connection at all.

MAKE IT YOURS
• Light, dark, or follow your system theme.
• Four text sizes, from small to extra large.
• Choose a styled display font or your system default.
• Decide which sections appear in every entry — pronunciation, etymology, synonyms, translations, topics, derived terms, hyponyms, descendants — or turn on detailed mode for all of them at once.
• Turn as-you-type suggestions on or off.

Send a suggestion or report a problem from inside the app. We read all of it.

CONNECTION
Looking up a new word needs an internet connection. Anything already in your Favourites or History opens offline.

Definitions, pronunciations and etymologies come from English Wiktionary and are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence (CC BY-SA). Because Lexica uses a snapshot, entries reflect Wiktionary as of the point that snapshot was taken and may differ from the live site.
