Bargarh Dhanujatra

Bargarh Dhanujatra is acclaimed as the world's largest open air theatre, held annually in Odisha's Bargarh District. Spanning 11 days from the 4th to the full moon day of Pousha, this drama-based festival portrays the legendary tale of Lord Shri Krishna and Kansa Maharaj. Recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, the Jatra transforms Bargarh into ancient Mathura and Ambapalli into Gopapur, using multiple sets to narrate the epic story.

The festival first commenced in 1947 after India's independence, turning the entire city into a vibrant theatrical stage where Kansa Maharaj rules for 11 days. Alongside the rich cultural performances, visitors also enjoy a grand fair featuring diverse handlooms and handicrafts from across India, making it a unique blend of theatre and traditional artistry.
