Features & Capabilities

Inktica is a powerful yet simple pixel art editor designed for artists and game developers looking to create retro-style graphics and animations. It offers a variety of dedicated pixel editing tools like Brush, Eraser, Flood-fill, Line, Rectangle, and Ellipse, optimized with pixel-perfect algorithms.

Users can organize their artwork using layers and select, cut, move, or transform parts of their drawings easily. Inktica supports animation with onion skinning for frame-by-frame sprite creation. It includes classic color palettes inspired by consoles such as Atari 2600, NES, and Game Boy, alongside importing palettes from Lospec. Import and export options support formats like .aseprite, .png, .jpeg, and .gif, allowing seamless integration with existing workflows. Finished works can be upscaled and shared directly on social media or saved to devices.

User Reviews

Inktica is praised for its minimalist, functional design tailored for pixel art with features like layers, animation, and sprite import. It offers a smooth experience comparable to desktop editors, with strong developer support. However, users face stability issues such as crashes, lagging, and some usability limitations like the absence of a fill tool, layer management features, syncing problems between devices, and difficulties accessing premium content. Overall, it is well-liked for mobile pixel art creation but could improve in stability and feature completeness.
Pros
  • The app offers a user-friendly, minimalistic interface with essential tools like layers and animation, suitable for pixel art creation on mobile devices.
  • It supports the import of sprites and images, enhancing creative possibilities and workflow.
  • Users appreciate the smooth operation and controls, especially the responsive drawing lines and features comparable to desktop pixel art editors like Aseprite.
  • The app includes useful options like downloading palettes from external sources (e.g., Lospec), beneficial for color management.
  • Developers provide good customer support and frequent updates to fix issues and add features.
Cons
  • Several users report app crashes or lag, particularly when switching tools like pipette or importing images as backgrounds, affecting stability.
  • Lack of some useful features such as fill tool, layer reordering, and the ability to easily manipulate selected items or frames.
  • Issues with syncing and linking data across devices, resulting in loss of saved work when switching devices.
  • Confusion or difficulty with purchasing or accessing premium features, including bigger canvas sizes and subscription content.
  • Limited palette view options and lack of some export formats (e.g., BMP) and gradient options reduce workflow flexibility.
Recent reviews
while I like the app, I don't like how it's starting to paywall things that used to be free. For example, the canvas size used to go up beyond 300h/350w for free(I never tested how far it could go, that's just a size I've used and liked), but now is behind a paywall to go beyond 192. it's never a good sign for an app when it starts making you pay for things that used to be free.
