Biography of the narrator Qalun (Isa ibn Mina) 120-220 AH

First: His name, lineage, nickname, title, and birthplace:

Isa ibn Mina ibn Wardan ibn Isa al-Zarqi, also known as al-Murri, a freedman of the Banu Zuhra of the Ansar, Abu Musa, nicknamed Qalun. It is said that he was the stepson of Nafi' ibn Abd al-Rahman, and he was very close to him. It was Nafi' who named him Qalun because of the excellence of his recitation. Qalun in Greek means "good."

Qalun said: "When I recited to Nafi', he would count thirty verses and say to me, 'Qalun,' meaning 'very good,' in Greek." It was said that he spoke to him in this way because Qalun was originally from the Romans. His great-grandfather, Abdullah, was among the Roman captives during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him). His captor brought him to Medina and sold him. Some of the Ansar (Helpers) bought him. He was born in the year 120 AH.

Secondly: His characteristics: Qalun was extremely deaf and could not hear a trumpet. However, if someone recited to him, he could hear them.

Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hasanjani said: Qalun, Isa ibn Mina, was extremely deaf. Even if you raised your voice to the highest degree, he would not hear him. When the Quran was recited to him, he would look at the reciter's lips and correct any errors or mistakes. Third: His Status and Knowledge:

He was one of the seven canonical reciters of the Quran, and the leadership in Arabic grammar and Quranic recitation in his time in the Hijaz passed to him. Qalun held a special place with his teacher, Nafi', and recited to Nafi' more than once in the year 150 AH, recording these recitations in his book.

Fourth: His Teachers in Quranic Recitation:
Qalun recited to his teacher, Nafi'. When asked how many times he recited to Nafi', he replied, "Too many to count, except that I sat with him for twenty years after finishing my studies." He also recited to Abu Ja'far (Yazid ibn al-Qa'qa'), 'Isa ibn Wardan, and others.

Fifth: Narrators of the recitation from him:

Many people narrated the recitation from Qalun, including: Ibrahim ibn al-Husayn al-Kisa'i, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad al-Madani, Ahmad ibn Salih al-Misri, Ahmad ibn Yazid al-Halwani, Isma'il ibn Ishaq al-Qadi, al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Shahham, al-Husayn ibn Abdullah al-Mu'allim, Salim ibn Harun Abu Sulayman, Abdullah ibn Isa al-Madani, and others.

Sixth: His status in narration and hadith:

Qalun narrated hadith from: Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Abi Kathir, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Zinad, Nafi' ibn Abi Nu'aym, and others.

Those who narrated from him include: Isma'il al-Qadi, Abu Zur'ah al-Razi, Ibn Dizil, Musa ibn Ishaq al-Ansari, Ahmad ibn Salih, Abu Nashit, Musa ibn Ishaq, Ali al-Hasanjani, and others.

Ahmad ibn Salih al-Misri was asked about his hadith, and he laughed and said: "You write from everyone!"

Al-Dhahabi said: "His hadith is generally written down."

Seventh: His death: Qalun died in Medina in the year (220 AH). Al-Dhahabi said: This is the most correct, and other things were said. He lived to be one hundred years old, may God Almighty have mercy on him.
