apoTAN offers three security methods in one app to securely authorize online banking transactions: pushTAN, photoTAN, and App2App. With pushTAN you receive a notification on your smartphone when a transaction is pending approval in online banking. Open the notification in the apoTAN app to verify the details, then authorize the transaction directly within the app. If internet is unavailable, use photoTAN to scan the online banking photoTAN graphic and obtain a 6-digit TAN to approve the transaction. App2App enables secure authorization from the apoBank app, eliminating manual TAN entry.

Security and requirements: The app adheres to high security standards, but users should keep their device malware-free, use updated security software, and enable a screen lock. The app does not work on rooted or jailbroken devices. Version 5.0.6 requires certified third-party keyboards; non-certified keyboards may cause the app to close at launch, so switch to the default keyboard.

User Reviews

ApoTAN integrates with apoBank and works on certified keyboards, with some developer responsiveness. The dominant feedback is reliability problems: login/access issues (biometrics broken, repeated attempts, hotline dependence), crashes after updates and OS compatibility gaps, inconsistent TAN/activation flow, and unreliable push notifications. Updates are infrequent and older devices may be poorly supported.

Pros

apoBank is great and apoTAN is a key reason for the positive experience.
App works with certified keyboards (e.g., Google Gboard).
Developer is responsive and addressing Android version support (e.g., Android 12).

Cons

Frequent login/access problems: biometrics stopped working since 03/2023 and many attempts are needed; sometimes you must call a hotline to regain access.
App crashes or cannot be opened after updates and older Android versions aren't fully supported (Android 10/12).
TAN/activation flow is unreliable: can't generate activation codes on some devices (e.g., Pixel 6) and Photo TAN password entry is error-prone; QR-code-based workflow adds friction.
Push notifications/TAN messages are not delivered reliably (missing/irregular push TAN).
