Checkfall: Chess Roguelike Android

Checkfall: Chess Roguelike

Chess game offline: a chess roguelike & roguelike deckbuilder. No ads.

Overview

Features & Capabilities

Checkfall is a chess roguelike: a roguelike deckbuilder game where the deck is your army, and every rule underneath it is real chess.

It is a chess variants game with fairy pieces, closer to a roguelike card game than a chess app.

The Old King is dead. The crown shattered into eight shards, and eight usurpers seized them. You are the last of the royal line, marching north with nine pieces and a half-loyal company. In the old woods a fairy of the First Court binds her magic to your banner: for gold, she will weave enchantments into your soldiers.

WIN BY CHECKMATE OR NOT AT ALL

This is the rule that makes Checkfall a roguelike game and not a chess app. A stalemate is a defeat. A threefold repetition is a defeat. Running out of moves is a defeat. It is not enough for your army to survive this strategy game — it has to be lethal. Every upgrade you buy in this turn based strategy game is a question about how you intend to kill, not about how you intend to be safe.

BUILD A BROKEN ARMY

Twenty-five abilities, woven onto the specific pieces you choose, two per piece, the way a card game deals a hand. Vanguard pawns that step diagonally. Longshot pawns that capture straight ahead. Berserkers that move again after a kill. Shieldbearers that survive their first death. Necromancers that raise a fresh pawn on every capture. Spectral bishops that slide through your own ranks.

Ten relics change the run and four consumables change a battle. Your army carries from battle to battle: it is your deck, and it grows all march.

MARCH THE BROKEN CROWN

A branching nine-row campaign game, one node per row, through the Greenmarch, the Ashen Wastes and the Blighted Vale. Battles, elites that always drop a relic, glades, camps, treasure and mystery events. Warchief Gorr and his Berserker wolf-knights block the middle of the road. The Lich King waits at the end — and he survives the first checkmate, so you will have to kill a king twice.

The opponent is a real chess engine that understands your modified pieces natively: it sees your Vanguard pawns and your Spectral bishops and plays around them. That is what separates this chess roguelike game from a slot machine with pieces on it.

THEN DEFEND WHAT YOU WON

Win the march and the war table becomes a siege chart. Crown Defense is the endless game mode: seasons of attackers, Heat that rises every season, three castle walls that break instead of ending your reign, and a Champion at the end of every season who drops a trophy. When the crown finally falls you bank the spoils as Tribute and spend it in the Throne Hall on decrees that outlast the reign — stouter walls and a bigger muster.

FOUR MARCHES, AND THE EASY ONES ARE ACTUALLY EASY

Page and Squire are genuinely gentle. The opponent blunders like a person, the purse is deep and the clock is long. If chess has always felt like a wall, start there. Knight is the war as it was meant to be fought. Kingslayer never blunders at all, the purse is lean and the clock is short.

A PREMIUM OFFLINE STRATEGY GAME

No subscription. No ads. No energy timers. No account. This is an offline chess game and a single player roguelike deckbuilder — nothing is uploaded, because there is no server.

The complete march on Page and Squire is free, ending in a real victory. One single purchase unlocks the Knight and Kingslayer marches and the whole of Crown Defense. That is the only purchase in this game, and it is not a subscription.

Three save profiles for this game. A collection remembering every ability, relic and foe you have seen. Every run reproducible from its seed.

There is no undo and there are no hints. It is chess. If you hang a piece, you hung it. What the game will always do is tell you exactly which rule ended your run — a checkmate, the clock, a stalemate, or a pin you did not see.

A chess roguelike game for anyone who wants a turn based strategy game with real depth underneath it — and wants to own it outright.
