Scanning always happens on-device — your barcode history and scan data never leave your phone. If you optionally create an account, only a small aggregated summary (your level, streak, badges, and vote choices) is backed up to the cloud, purely so you don't lose your progress. Accounts are completely optional; the app works fully offline without one.
