كتاب تفسير الطبري

The Comprehensive Explanation of the Interpretation of the Verses of the Qur'an, known as Tafsir al-Tabari, by Imam Abu Ja'far al-Tabari (d. 310 AH), is the foremost reference for transmitted interpretations among Sunni Muslims. It is distinguished by its comprehensive presentation of hadiths and narrations with their chains of transmission from the Companions and their Successors, along with its attention to variant readings, linguistics, grammar, and legal reasoning. It is considered the most authentic and thorough of all commentaries on the Qur'an.

Abu Hamid al-Isfarayini said, "If a man were to travel to China to obtain a copy of Muhammad ibn Jarir's commentary, it would not be too much to ask."

The author of Lisan al-Mizan mentioned that Ibn Khuzaymah borrowed Ibn Jarir's commentary from someone who had copied it from al-Tabari, but returned it after several years, saying, "I examined it from beginning to end; I know of no one on the face of the earth more knowledgeable than Ibn Jarir." Ibn Taymiyyah said: “As for the commentaries available to people, the most authentic is that of Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari, for he mentions the statements of the early generations with sound chains of transmission, and it contains no innovation, nor does he quote from those accused of fabrication.”
