Features & Capabilities

The Sacred Grounds app is an augmented reality exhibition that can be seen from March 26th, 2022 at the Zollern colliery in Dortmund. Scan the target on site and immerse yourself in a journey into the interior of digital devices.

The social, economic and environmental consequences of the production of media technologies are mostly invisible in our everyday life and yet immense.
Located in the Zollern colliery - a historical place of raw material extraction and energy generation - the augmented reality installation by Refrakt focuses on the analogue effects of our digital actions and encourages a critical examination of our behavior.

While at the beginning of industrialization raw material extraction and production took place on one's own doorstep, today the resources for digital technology are mined at the other end of the world in mostly precarious conditions. The devices that connect us to the digital world are becoming more and more like a black box, the manufacture and functioning of which are obscured in order to maintain a magical techno-positivist aura. But will your own smartphone still feel the same after a look behind the scenes of the outwardly clean digital world?
