The book Lisan al-Arab is a comprehensive dictionary of the Arabic language. Its aim is to document Arabic vocabulary, explain its meanings, and clarify its usage by citing the Quran, Hadith, and Arabic poetry. Its author is Muhammad ibn Mukarram ibn Ali, also known as Ridwan ibn Ahmad ibn Abi al-Qasim ibn Habqa ibn Manzur al-Ansari al-Afriqi al-Misri, Jamal al-Din Abu al-Fadl. He compiled its material from five major linguistic works: Tahdhib al-Lughah by al-Azhari, al-Muhkam by Ibn Sidah, al-Sihah by al-Jawhari, the glosses of Ibn Barri, and al-Nihayah by Ibn al-Athir. He collected, edited, and abridged many lengthy literary works such as al-Aghani, al-Iqd, al-Dhakhira, and Ibn al-Baytar's Mufradat. It is reported that his abridgments comprise five hundred volumes. He was a prominent and distinguished figure in literature, known for his elegant prose. Al-Subki and al-Dhahabi narrated from him, noting his unique expertise in high-level hadiths. He was knowledgeable in grammar, linguistics, history, and writing, and he abridged the History of Damascus to about a quarter of its original length.
