Catholic religious education and morals are not primarily about knowing what is right or wrong. There is no point in knowing but not doing it, as Saint James said: "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead" (Jas 2:26). Thus, learning is not just to know, but by learning a person grows and changes. Not just learning and changing, but also changing circumstances.

In the religious learning process, it is hoped that it will not only increase Catholic religious insight or knowledge, but also hone religious skills and realize students' religious attitudes. Of course, a complete and balanced religious attitude includes human relationships with their Creator and human relationships with each other and the surrounding environment.

To ensure this balance, religious lessons need to be given special emphasis related to manners or character education. The essence of character is a person's attitude or behavior in interacting with God, oneself, family, society, the nation and the natural environment.

This Catholic Religious Education and Character Education book was prepared in the spirit of Indonesian education (UU No. 20 of 2003) to produce human resources with Pancasila characteristics. The Vision and Mission of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology as stated in the Minister of Education and Culture Regulation Number 22 of 2020 concerning the Strategic Plan of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology for 2020-2024 strengthens what the country aspires to in the 1945 Constitution and Law no. 20 of 2003, emphasizes the importance of educational output that has a Pancasila character.

The Pancasila student profile is the embodiment of Indonesian students as lifelong learners who have global competence and behave in accordance with Pancasila values, with six main characteristics: 1) faith, devotion to God Almighty, and noble character, 2) global diversity, 3 ) work together, 4) be independent, 5) reason critically, and 6) be creative.

Pacasila character values ​​are explored and absorbed from the religious knowledge learned by students and become a driving force in the formation, development, improvement, maintenance and improvement of students' behavior so that they are willing and able to carry out their life tasks in harmony, harmony and balance between inner and outer, physical and spiritual, material and spiritual, as well as individual and social beings.

In short, it can be said that religious education can produce human resources or individuals with integrity, or in Biblical language it is said "...faith without works is dead" (James 2:26). Faith accompanied by good deeds is living faith. It is this living faith, which we have by God's grace, that can save us (Eph 2:8-10; Tit 3:5-8).
