Review summary

Users praise Helicon Remote for robust remote shooting (focus stacking, timelapse, exposure, live view) and flexible save options, plus responsive support. However, the app is plagued by connectivity reliability issues, inconsistent camera detection across brands, and storage/behavior changes that can impact workflows. Stability problems (crashes/ freezes) and missing features (video capture) or UI quirks compound frustrations, especially on older cameras like the 700D or D90. Overall, strong feature set is offset by reliability and compatibility concerns; updates have both fixed issues and introduced new ones.
Pros
  • Comprehensive remote control of camera settings (exposure, live view, focus) across Canon and Nikon, ideal for timelapse and macro work.
  • Precise focus stepping and focus stacking support, useful for astrophotography and macro work.
  • Flexible saving options: photos can be stored on the device or directly on the camera/card.
  • Easy WiFi/USB OTG connection options for quick setup.
  • Responsive developer support with prompt fixes when issues arise.
Cons
  • Unreliable connectivity and sporadic camera recognition across devices/models (e.g., Z50, 700D, D90, D3300).
  • Storage and file handling changes that can reset or override camera/storage settings and limit where files are saved.
  • Stability problems: frequent crashes, freezes, or the app not opening.
  • Missing or buggy features and UI issues (e.g., video capture not supported on some cameras, confusing UI).
  • Compatibility limitations with certain cameras and USB/wireless setups.

Been using Helicon since 2014, many programs they discontinued (and not able to download old versions either 😢 but the remote is a great app for focus stacking. shame they discontinued filter - amazing program and super fast. this app is great for shooting time lapses and stacking but controlling your camera remotely. The Helicon team was very conscientious to help resolve issues through the years, and hopefully they will develop more products.

If you have a Canon... or nikon YOU NEED THIS! . Wired remote control of all your camera settings is by far a must for some shots. Long exposure W/Live view is awesome. Best of all it can save to the device OR Cam👍 . If your device has OTG them all you need is the Dongle & Cable and the rest is a breeze❤️

Brilliant app! I use it on an Android mobile phone to remotely control both my Canon EOS 850D DSLR and Canon EOS R7 cameras. While there are many useful features such as shooting timelapse sequences with exposure bracketing, the one feature I rely most on is to adjust the focus in tiny steps remotely in manual. For astrophotography, this is much faster and more precise than operating the manual focussing ring on the lens. (Also, the developer is very responsive to issues that might occur).

Since the latest update am unable to open the app. Tried uninstalling the app then reinstalling but still not working. Prior to this the app worked perfectly. Updated to 5 stars due to app providers prompt response in fixing the app.

I thought that this app would allow me to take photos that will be stored on my Canon camera. Apparently it only takes photos that will store on your phone (camera card show zero photos), and will only allow cr2 files for the 3 day trial period. Also a major bug in that if I turn the live view display in this app off, my camera crashes with a warning I've never seen before. Also, possibly the worst, most confusing ui I've ever seen.
