Win7 Scrollbars

Scrollbars that match Windows 7's native appearance.

Win7 Scrollbars is a Chrome extension designed to bring back the classic Windows 7 native scrollbar appearance. Modern Chrome versions replaced system native scrollbars with a new style that lacks arrow buttons and the familiar look. This extension restores the scrollbars to precisely match the Windows 7 style including the arrow buttons, providing a nostalgic and functional scrolling experience.

Implemented entirely in CSS with no JavaScript or external resource access, Win7 Scrollbars respects your privacy and operates solely on your local machine. It cannot modify content or track user data. Note that it does not affect certain Chrome internal pages, PDF viewer, developer tools, or drop-down menus due to technical limitations. Users can enable scrollbar styling on file URLs and in incognito mode via extension settings. Win7 Scrollbars offers a simple, safe way to enjoy Windows 7 style scrollbars in the Chrome browser.

User reviews

Win7 Scrollbars is praised for restoring classic Windows 7 scrollbar visuals and usability, adding scroll arrows and working on most websites immediately. However, common issues include missing borders on the scrollbar thumb, lack of support on sites like YouTube, occasional functionality problems causing errors, and reduced compatibility due to lack of recent updates. Despite limitations, users appreciate the extension's nostalgia and improved usability over modern minimalistic scrollbars and hope for future fixes and updates.
Pros

  • Scrollbars appear on most websites, enhancing consistency and usability.
  • Improves usability compared to newer thin, rounded, or minimalistic scrollbars in browsers.

  • Works immediately without waiting for page load, enhancing user experience.
Cons

  • Lack of support on some websites like YouTube and Chrome Web Store pages.
  • Causes functionality issues such as Google search errors and status errors for some users.
  • No updates for years resulting in compatibility issues with newer versions of Chrome and other browsers.
  • Some users report the extension being disabled automatically or not working well with recent browser updates.

This is the best scrollbar modifier so far. It doesn't wait for the page to finish loading and is immediately available. Opera not having settings to override the ridiculously thin scrollbar is _egregiously hostile_ to the user!

Almost perfect! I didn't like the recent browser update replacing the generic Windows scrollbar with a "Mac-ified" or mobile looking one--thin, with rounded corners. While it looks alright, it's bad for usability since it doesn't show you the area where you can click to scroll, and no buttons appear when you click the up/down arrows, just changes the triangles' size. This extension works so well, this is even better than what I had before! This is the GOAT Windows 7 scrollbar, even better than Windows 10 one. My only (very minor) gripe is the rectangle bar image (what you click on to scroll) lacks a proper border on the top and bottom. It looks like someone cropped the jpg. I don't know if this is actually possible to fix or not, but just putting it out there. Anyway, I highly recommend this extension regardless.
