Toggle JavaScript

Enable or disable JavaScript without the hassle.

Toggle JavaScript is a Chrome extension designed to simplify the process of enabling or disabling JavaScript globally in your browser. With its easy-access button, users no longer need to navigate through Chrome's complicated Settings panel. The extension was primarily created with web developers in mind but is equally beneficial for anyone wanting quick control over JavaScript functionality.

Key features include a global JavaScript master switch and an optional auto-reload to ensure accurate page rendering when toggling JavaScript. Unlike other extensions that provide per-domain toggling, Toggle JavaScript offers a straightforward, single control for all sites. This ensures consistency and reliability in page behavior, enhancing the browsing and development experience.

User reviews

Toggle JavaScript is praised for its simplicity and effectiveness in disabling JavaScript across all websites with a single click, assisting in troubleshooting and improving browsing experience by bypassing intrusive scripts. However, users commonly criticize its inability to toggle JavaScript on a per-site basis, the small and unclear toggle icon, and occasional functionality issues. Overall, it's useful for quick global JS toggling but lacks finer control and improved user interface elements.
Pros
  • Effectively disables JavaScript with one click, making it easy to test websites without JS.
  • Remembers previous site settings, toggling JS accordingly when revisiting pages.
  • Simple and straightforward to use, removing the need to manually change site permissions.
  • Works well for quickly identifying site problems caused by JavaScript.
  • Useful for bypassing annoying scripts like locked scroll bars and intrusive ads.
Cons
  • Only disables JavaScript globally across all sites, lacking domain-specific control.
  • Icon and toggle indicator are small and not easily noticeable, causing usability issues.
  • The toggle state is represented confusingly, causing some user frustration.
  • Does not function like Chrome's built-in debugger 'disable JavaScript' feature, limiting development utility.
  • Some users report it stopped working after updates or over time.

This extension seems to work for me, but it only gets a three-star review because it's got a double-negative in it, which, as a programmer, drives me nuts. Basically, when the extension is off, it denotes NOT NOT javascript. This is a BASIC guideline in any programming, to not do double-negatives, and it's true in ALL kinds of ways, such as variable naming, and, particularly, user interface. He/she clearly should have made the switch denote OFF=JS_off, and ON=JS_on (and it's backwards from this). To me, this suggests that this isn't a seasoned programmer who did this.

Also needed as a-hole webmasters decide to lock the scroll bar, it's annoying having to go into a sites settings and disable JavaScript for each site that does this. No bookmarking or sharing for them from me! Jerks!

Works for what I need it for - to identify problems on a site by disabling JS. People have complained that it disables JS globally - but I don't think "site by site" is what this is aiming for. Its a "toggle it off to test" thing. Its for when you need to see how something works without JS if JS is causing it to fall over. You toggle it off - see what it's doing then when finished toggle it back on again. For THAT it works as it says on the tin. For a "turn JS off for this site" - its a different product that's needed - this doesnt do this but I don't think it claims it does either.
