Chess Helper: Notation, Analysis, Time Alerts

By: mldnq Add-on
Highlights chess notation on your board as you play on Chess.com and Lichess, alerts you on low time, opens free Lichess analysis, and checks your opponent for cheating.

Features & Capabilities

Chess Helper brings standard algebraic chess notation (SAN) to life directly on your board, no more switching back and forth between moves and notation. As you play on Chess.com or Lichess.org, this extension automatically:

Detects each move in real time via a lightweight MutationObserver

Highlights the destination square with a subtle overlay grid

Displays the SAN (e.g. Nf3, exd5, O-O) on that square, then fades out

Handles castling, pawn promotions, captures and disambiguations seamlessly

Also included:

Audio Time Alerts – Spoken countdown warnings at thresholds you pick (30s, 10s, 5s, 3s, 2s, 1s), so you never lose on time.

Free Lichess Analysis – One click exports your Chess.com game to Lichess for free computer analysis, with the board already turned to your side.

Check your opponent – One click opens a free statistical report for the player you are facing, with their username and the time control already filled in.

Everything runs locally in your browser. The extension collects no personal data and transmits nothing on its own; the opponent check simply opens a link, carrying your opponent's public username, when you click it.

How it works

Install and enable the extension.

Navigate to any live game on Chess.com or Lichess.org.

When you (or your opponent) move a piece, watch the board highlight the landing square and show its notation, instant feedback that helps you learn SAN while you play.

Open the extension popup to pause, change highlight duration, enable audio alerts, analyze on Lichess, or check your opponent.

A note for Firefox: Firefox asks for permission to run on Chess.com and Lichess separately from installing. If the extension looks inactive, open the popup and use the "Enable on Chess.com & Lichess" button, then reload the game page.

Who it's for:

Beginners mastering algebraic notation

Coaches & students reinforcing move-to-notation connections

Casual players who want a cleaner, more informative board

Players who want audio time warnings without premium subscriptions
