Certificate Watch Firefox

Certificate Watch

Warns when TLS certificates change over time.

Features & Capabilities

Certificate Watch is a Chrome extension designed to enhance your online security by monitoring TLS certificates presented by websites. It stores the initial certificate of each visited domain and warns you if any subsequent changes occur, helping you detect potential security threats. The extension icon indicates whether a certificate is stored, new, or changed, allowing you to review and manage certificate updates easily.

This tool follows the Trust On First Use (TOFU) model by automatically trusting the first certificate it encounters per domain. It doesn't validate certificates—that's handled by your browser—but it alerts you to changes so you can make informed decisions. While it does not block connections, it serves as a valuable countermeasure against attacks involving compromised certificates, empowering you to stay aware of your connection security.

Is Certificate Watch Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Certificate Watch requires a few sensitive permissions. Exercise caution before installing.
