This image is from a sacred place to the Hopi people (I am Hopi) called Yupkoyvi (the place beyond the horizon), also known as Chaco Canyon. My ancestors come from this place, it is important to recognize and maintain connections to our past, because it is the only way to move forward.
Michael Namingha is a visual artist and photographer. He is a descendant of the Hopi (Arizona) and Tewa (New Mexico) tribes and currently resides in Santa Fe, NM.

Tyler Rhoades, 2023-12-19AS A MEMBER OF THE HOPI TRIBE, ID HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS, IS THE ONE. CHACO CANYON ITSELF IS BREATHTAKING,YET, TO UNDERSTAND JUST HOW CONNECTED WE ARE TO THIS EXACT LOCATION, IS A GIFT IN ITSELF. I HAD TRAVELLED HERE BACK IN 2011 AND WHEN I WENT BEYOND LIMITS AND HAD A CHANCE TO ACTUALLY SIT AND LISTEN .... I WAS FLASHED BACK TO THE TIME WHEN THIS VILLAGE WAS IN ABUNDANCE. THE SOUNDS OF THE CHILDREN RUNNING ABOUT PLAYING, THE LAUGHTER, THE SOUNDS OF THE HORSE HOOFBEATS AND THE SOUNDS OF THEIR BREATH AS THEY RAN THROUGHOUT THE VILLAGE. I COULD SEE THE LIFE THAT ONCE EXISTED. I WAS THERE. IN THAT TIME .
I WASNT SLEEPING OR DREAMING , BUT AWAKE LOOKING AROUND AT THE ENTIRE VILLAGE UNABLE TO SEE THE CURRENT BARRENESS OF CHACO BUT SEEING CHACO CANYON.. ALIVE.
