Disable HTML5 Autoplay (Reloaded)

Disable autoplay and preloading of HTML5 video and audio players.

Disable HTML5 Autoplay (Reloaded) is a powerful Chrome extension designed to block automatic playback and preloading of HTML5 video and audio players on websites. By removing the autoplay attribute and integrating with the media's JavaScript API, it ensures videos and audios remain paused until you choose to play them.

Key features include a customizable whitelist allowing you to exclude trusted websites from blocking, ensuring seamless media playback where you want it, and easy toggles to activate or deactivate specific functions via the toolbar panel. This extension prevents background videos from interrupting your browsing experience while buffering videos when necessary for smoother control.

User reviews

Disable HTML5 Autoplay (Reloaded) is praised for effectively blocking video autoplay on many sites, providing relief from intrusive ads. Users appreciate its simplicity and reliability compared to other abandoned extensions. However, it is no longer maintained, causing issues like completely blocking videos on some sites, lacking site-specific exceptions, and conflicting with other extensions. Some users report privacy concerns. Despite these drawbacks, it remains functional on various platforms, but its abandonment and compatibility problems limit its usability.
Pros
  • Effectively blocks autoplay of videos on most websites, reducing intrusive video ads.
  • Simple to use and reliable compared to other similar extensions that have failed or been abandoned.
  • Allows users to manually play videos by clicking them after blocking autoplay.
  • Provides some level of control over video playback, appreciated especially by users sensitive to intrusive auto-playing content.
  • Still functional on popular sites like YouTube and several news websites, even with updates or new site designs.
Cons
  • Extension is abandoned and no longer supported or updated, leading to compatibility issues with some websites.
  • Blocks video playback entirely on some sites, making videos unplayable even when users try to start them manually.
  • Conflicts with other extensions such as ad blockers, resulting in inconsistent behavior.
  • Lacks robust site-specific controls or exception lists, forcing users to disable it entirely for certain websites.
  • Potential privacy concerns due to installation of persistent cookies from unknown domains without clear purpose.

Guess I can't use it anymore. disabled for good with Chrome. I can't even get it to enable with legacy mode. HECK .. like,.,. how DARE I want to stop videos from auto playing, right? sad

Been using this for awhile. Works great and does its job, but certain websites require for you to turn it off 'cause then the videos won't play at all no matter how many times you press play on them (eg. On Deviantart and BlueSky, videos don't play at all when this extension's on when you press play on them, so you have to turn the extension off, and then refresh the page the videos are on to play them).

Still works perfect. this is the only extension that stops autoplay everywhere while others fail. thank you.
