Bias Shield Firefox

Bias Shield

Push back against bias in machine translation

Features & Capabilities

Bias Shield is an extension for your web browser which adds bias-handling features to Google Translate and DeepL Translator. Bias Shield springs into action while you're using one of these online translators and gives you access to the following debiasing tools:

DeBiasByUs: You can use Bias Shield to report gender-biased translations to DeBiasByUs, a project which is collecting a database of gender-biased translations. Also, Bias Shield warns you when the translation you have been given has previously been reported as gender-biased, and offers you an unbiased translation instead (if one is available).

Fairslator: Fairslator is an application which automatically detects and corrects machine translation biases caused by ambiguities in gender and forms of address. Bias Shield plugs Fairslator right into Google Translate and DeepL Translator, so you can use Fairslator's debiasing features without leaving their websites.

Is Bias Shield Safe?

Risk impact
Risk impact measures the level of extra permissions an extension has access to. A low risk impact extension cannot do much harms, whereas a high risk impact extension can do a lot of damage like stealing your password, bypassing your security settings, and accessing your personal data. High risk impact extensions are not necessarily malicious. However, if they do turn malicious, they can be very harmful.

Bias Shield requires some sensitive permissions that could impact your browser and data security. Exercise caution before installing.

Our algorithms are not perfect, and are subject to change as we discover new ways to detect malicious extensions. We recommend that you always exercise caution when installing a Firefox add-on.
