AVIM - Vietnamese Input Method Firefox

AVIM - Vietnamese Input Method

Type Vietnamese in any text field on the web — Telex, VNI or VIQR. No system input method, no keyboard layout to change.

Features & Capabilities

AVIM lets you type Vietnamese in any text field on the web, without installing a system-wide input method or changing your keyboard layout.

INPUT METHODS • Auto — accepts Telex and VNI at the same time, so you never have to choose • Telex • VNI • VIQR and VIQR*

Pick one from the toolbar popup. Your choice is remembered and applies to every tab.

WHERE IT WORKS • Text areas, and text, search and tel inputs • Rich text editors built on contenteditable, including the ones that re-render their content from their own model • Google Docs • Editors inside iframes, and inputs inside a shadow root • Fields and frames added to the page after it loads, so single-page apps and dynamically built forms work too

PER-SITE CONTROL Site settings in the popup takes one row per site, each set to On, Off or Default. * matches anything, /…/ is a regular expression, and the most specific row wins. Or press Ctrl three times to flip just the page you have open.

SHORTCUT KEYS Define your own: type vn then a space and get Việt Nam. Off by default; turn it on in the popup.

QUICK INPUT BOX The popup has a box for a quick line of Vietnamese, with buttons to copy it, search it in a new tab, or strip the diacritics back out — handy for filenames, search queries, and forms that reject accented characters.

HANDY TO KNOW • Tap Ctrl twice to turn AVIM off and back on everywhere, or three times for the open page only • Ctrl+Shift+V opens the popup, Command+Shift+V on macOS, and you can remap it • The toolbar badge reads on or off, so the current state is always visible • Optional Vietnamese spell check, which stops the engine from forming syllables that do not exist in Vietnamese • The popup follows your system light or dark theme

WHAT IT LEAVES ALONE AVIM only ever touches text areas, text/search/tel inputs, and contenteditable editors. Password, email, URL, number and date fields are never touched, and neither is any read-only field, so it cannot corrupt a login or an address you paste in.

PRIVACY AVIM sends nothing anywhere. No analytics, no remote code, no account, and it works offline. What you type is transformed inside the page and is never recorded or transmitted.

Kept locally in your browser and nowhere else: your input method and options, your shortcut rows, your per-site rows, and whatever you leave in the popup's quick input box.

The Search button is the only thing that reaches the network, and only when you press it: it opens an ordinary search in a new tab using the search engine you already have set as default.
