Automatic Spelling Language Firefox

Automatic Spelling Language

Automatically changes the dictionary used for spell checking based on the language of text in input fields.

Features & Capabilities

Automatic Spelling Language is a Chrome extension that intelligently switches the spell checking dictionary based on the detected language within text input fields. Utilizing the Compact Language Detection (CLD2) framework integrated into Firefox, it identifies the input text language to apply the correct dictionary automatically, enhancing multilingual typing experiences without sending data to external servers.

The extension supports over 60 languages including English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, and more. It's tested on popular platforms like GitHub, Gmail, Reddit, Stack Exchange, Trello, and Wikipedia, ensuring seamless operation across common sites. Users can reset or adjust content preferences if manual dictionary selections have overridden automatic detection, providing full control over spell check behavior. Perfect for multilingual users, it enhances productivity by removing manual dictionary switching while maintaining privacy and accuracy.

User Reviews

Users appreciate that the add-on automates switching spellcheck languages and saves manual switching; many say it works well. However, multiple reviewers report inconsistent behavior (fails, needs restarts/reinstalls), site-specific mis-detections (notably Reddit/Facebook), delayed activation, and perceived degradation or lack of maintenance over time.
Pros
  • Automatically detects and switches spellcheck language, removing the need to switch dictionaries manually.
  • Many users report it works well and is a practical solution for multi-language typing.
  • For some people it functions reliably after initial setup or a restart.
Cons
  • Unreliable or inconsistent: several reviewers report it fails, stops working, or requires reinstalling/restarting to recover.
  • Site-specific mis-detection or overrides of manual language settings (reported especially on Reddit and Facebook/old Reddit text areas).
  • Delayed activation: may need you to type a few words before it switches, so it’s not always instant while typing.
  • Appears to degrade for some users over time; a few reviewers suspect it is no longer well maintained.

This plugin used to work, but it seems to be unmaintained since 2023. For me, it caused problems on notion.so, leading to thousands of warnings and a huge memory leak. For anyone looking for a reason why Notion may be unbearably slow and produce these warnings, disabling this extension may the the solution. This is Notion's warning when this extension is enabled: NOTION WARNING Reverting mutation of attribute lang from "null" -> "en" in component undefined MutationRecord { type: "attributes", target: div.notranslate, addedNodes: NodeList [], removedNodes: NodeList [], previousSibling: null, nextSibling: null, attributeName: "lang", attributeNamespace: null, oldValue: null }
