inShade: Shady Walk Routes

inShade finds walking routes that stay in the shade. Instead of only the shortest path, it works out where buildings cast shadows right now and suggests a cooler way to walk there.

WHY INSHADE
Summer walks, the commute to work or school, a stroll with a stroller or a dog, sightseeing in an unfamiliar city — a few degrees of shade makes all of it easier. inShade is a heat and sun protection tool you use with your hat, parasol and sunscreen.

WHEN TO USE IT
• You want to stay out of direct sunlight in the middle of a hot day
• A slightly longer route is fine if it is cooler
• You are worried about heatstroke, sunburn or UV exposure
• You are pushing a stroller or walking with small children
• You are walking a dog and want to avoid hot asphalt
• You are planning a walking or running route in summer

HOW IT WORKS
inShade combines building footprints and heights with the position of the sun at the time you choose, then works out which parts of each street are in shadow. The same street can be sunny in the morning and shaded in the late afternoon, so changing your departure time can change the route you are offered.
