- Well-designed and user-friendly UI that is visually appealing and easy to navigate.
- Features such as player stats, playing style breakdowns, and a leaderboard for a mini-game enhance user engagement.
- Ability to follow top players' games live with commentary and notifications keeps users updated.
- The app supports a diverse community of chess enthusiasts, helping popularize chess as a sport with an enjoyable experience.
Cons
- App suffers from significant performance issues including lag, freezing, and slow response times especially when navigating game moves.
- The commentary section is often cluttered, buggy, or misaligned with the moves, reducing readability and user experience.
- Navigation is difficult due to lack of move lists, slow or unresponsive controls, and sensitivity problems with swiping gestures.
- Notifications can be overwhelming and spammy, especially during blitz tournaments, requiring better customization.
- Limited tournament content with few smaller events and occasional stale/live game status issues detract from comprehensiveness.
Recent reviews
The app is great, it lets me follow all the top players' games live and there's even a built in mini-game where you can guess the next move a player will make. Super fun and interactive, and there's even a leaderboard for the mini-game! You can see player stats, past games, how they compare to other top players and even a breakdown of individual players play style, such as Offensive v. Defensive, tactical v. positional, etc. The UI looks great and it's super user friendly as well!

I have been looking for an app to follow chess events for a while, and I'll say that Magnus got the fundamentals right. However, there are a few improvements that need to be made. Tournament pages have all the games for a round in one big list. It would make more sense for the games to be under some sort of match page. Also, you should structure notifications like other sports apps, so I won't be spammed with two notifications per game. Finally, the game commentary feels a tad bit too cluttered.
