CatchReel - Fishing Log

I'm a retired Google engineer and an avid angler down in the Florida Keys. And like a lot of us, I'm always chasing an edge, trying to figure out what's actually working so I can catch more fish.

For years I kept a fishing log by hand, and it was a grind. After a long, tiring day on the water, I had to remember to write up every catch, then bounce between a handful of (mostly paid) apps to dig up the tide, moon, wind, water temp, and the rest of the day's conditions. If I didn't get to it before midnight, forget it: most of those apps only show today and the forecast, so the conditions were already gone.

And after all that work, my log was just a pile of notes. I couldn't search it, sort it, or actually learn anything from it.

So I built CatchReel.

Here's the idea. During a fishing trip, our favorite thing to do besides fishing is taking pictures with our catches. And beyond the valuable memories, those photos actually carry everything that matters. The time of the catch, the GPS location, and the species. CatchReel simply puts them to work.

Catch a fish, take a photo on the boat, and get back to fishing. Later, whenever you've got a minute (that night, the next morning, even a week after the trip), upload your catch photos and CatchReel builds the entire fishing trip for you automatically.

WHAT CATCHREEL DOES
• Identifies the species in every catch photo automatically, through AI technology
• Pulls each catch's exact time and GPS straight from the photo
• Builds the whole fishing trip, with the date, your hours on the water, the location, and every catch pinned on a map
• Calls various third-party services to gather the data and mesh up your trip conditions (tide, moon, wind, wave, water temp, pressure, sunrise, and sunset)
• On the catch level, logs the conditions at the exact moment of each catch (the tide stage, water temp, light, pressure trend, and solunar period)
• Using our proprietary technology, estimates the water depth for every catch
• Gives you each catch's coordinates in the format your chartplotter uses, so you can create the waypoint later. Nothing lost, it's all in the photo

WHY IT'S DIFFERENT

HOW IT WORKS
1. First, make sure to turn on the location feature for your phone's camera.
2. Catch a fish worth logging and snap a photo on the boat.
3. When you get a chance, open CatchReel and pick your catch photos from a specific fishing trip.
4. CatchReel identifies each fish, builds the trip, and meshes up the conditions.
5. Review your log and add length, weight, or notes if you like.
