Review summary

Users praise the app’s attractive UI, solid Plex audiobook support, offline downloads, and comprehensive playback features. Major complaints repeated across reviews are connection and sign‑in failures, frequent bugs/crashes, chapter‑related playback glitches and speed problems, poor car/Android Auto behavior, and dissatisfaction with the subscription pricing and model.
Pros
  • Attractive, polished user interface and modern design
  • Strong Plex audiobook support — good playback features, progress bar, and ability to download books for offline listening
  • Playback feature set (speed control, chapter navigation, sync across devices) when functioning
  • Useful alternative to Audible for DRM‑free audiobooks and better than previous Plex audiobook options
Cons
  • Frequent bugs and instability: sign‑in/linking failures, crashes, failed downloads and developers slow to fix issues
  • Connectivity and setup problems: requires external access/hairpinning or exposes network; Plex Relay often not supported
  • Playback glitches related to chapters (repeats, stuttering, skipping) and playback speed issues (doesn’t remember speed; crackling at non‑default speeds)
  • Subscription model complaints: annual only, auto‑renewing free trial, no reasonable family or lifetime option
  • Car/Android Auto integration problems: doesn’t auto‑resume, steering‑wheel controls map to chapters, unwanted auto‑start after calls

Chapters are not exact, and cause issues with the book repeating, stuttering or skipping. No configuration at the app level to turn off chapters or to fix the gaps they miss. No option for a family to subscribe, other than buying 5 subscriptions (not worth it). Account deletion at the end of the trial period requires sending an email.

Features may or may not be there, hard to tell since it's gated right from the start with a subscription fee and the "free trial" which is auto-renewing to trick people into paying if they forget to cancel. I'm not paying a subscription fee for software where I provide the media, the hosting, the network and the device, and given you are marketing to a niche of a niche who are technically inclined, I doubt I'm alone. Write decent software once, sell it for a straightforward price.

Down from 4 to 3 stars. I was hopeful a year ago. The app still looks great, but it's $12/yr and there haven't been enough improvements to basic functionality. Sometimes, stuff doesn't just work right, including playing downloaded books or casting , and I have to restart my whole phone to get it to work right. Pixel 8, Android 14.

perfect for audiobooks you have in your Plex library. I just wished it had better car stop and play options when turning your car on and off. also I widh there was a way to turn off the option of automatically turning on after a phone call. It does that even if the app is on in the background.

Great app with an attractive interface. Love that I can download the books for offline listening. The only issue I have left with this app is that it won't connect to my Plex server when I'm on the same network. I'm assuming this is a hair-pinning issue, but haven't been able to figure it out.

Great app but it signs your our and won't let you sign back in after it fails. Wife's same error & she can't use. Downloaded books can fail too. Error: android.os.RemoteException: Searched too many bytes. Tablet still can't sign in. Force closes repeatedly. It worked for a while now doesn't. Again. Reinstall does not help.

Almost perfect. Does everything I could really ask for, theres only one problem. When I pay books at any speed other than default, there is slight crackling which makes it unusable. I'll keep my subscription for a while and check back in periodically to see if this is resolved, because this is the best solution I've found for Plex that exists right now

A good start but still needs a bit of work. Yes the app does not remember your listening speed and defaults back to 1.0. definitely an annoyance. Also the forward and back buttons when you use your steering wheel is not plus 15 seconds minus 15 seconds like everybody else instead its chaptersn not the default that works better in a car. Please please please address these ASAP. Also I do not see any settings for how much it rewinds after a long pause to improve picking up where you left off.

Pretty good after the new update. Still some issues, nothing major though. Book does not auto resume on Android Auto when getting in the car, have to start it manually. Also, when this happens, it doesn't remember the speed I'm playing the book at, I listen at 1.4x speed and have to adjust it back up every time. Annoying, but not dealbreakers.

Book camp 2.0 is a huge upgrade from before. It's quite beautiful to look at. The progress bar is fantastic. Just think it could use 2 separate ones for audiobooks. One for chapters and one for the book as a whole. Where I think it could be improved is adding support for Audiobook Shelf in addition to plex. Especially since Audiobookshelf handles many things much much better than plex.
