Features & Capabilities

Ad Cleanser gives you quieter pages and a new tab worth landing on. Ads are filtered out before a page finishes drawing, so you get straight to what you came for instead of watching boxes load and collapse. When a site is one you want to support, you can let it through in a single click.

WHAT AD CLEANSER DOES

Ad Cleanser filters ad and ad delivery requests as pages load, and it hides the empty containers those ads leave behind, so you are not reading around blank gaps. Video pages get their own handling, covering in-stream breaks and the promotional panels beside the player. Everything is controlled from the toolbar button, and anything you want left alone can be allowed through without digging through settings.

FEATURES

  • Broad built-in filtering. A bundled filter list covering ad networks and ad delivery hosts works from the moment a page starts loading, so ads are handled before you ever see them.
  • Cosmetic cleanup. Leftover ad containers, sponsored blocks, and reserved ad space are hidden, which keeps page layouts from jumping around as you read.
  • Video page handling. Dedicated coverage for in-stream ad breaks and the promotional panels that sit alongside the player.
  • Allow a whole site. One toggle turns filtering off across an entire domain, which is the quickest way to support a site you read often.
  • Allow a single page. A second toggle turns filtering off for just one address and leaves the rest of that site untouched.
  • Clear context in the toolbar. The button shows the site and the page you are currently on, so you always know what a toggle is about to change.
  • Automatic reload. After you change an exception the tab refreshes so you see the result right away. Switch it off if you would rather reload yourself.
  • A settings page that lists everything. Every allowed site and every allowed page appears with a remove button, and you can add entries by hand. What you type is checked as you go, so a mistyped address does not get saved.
  • Dark mode. Available from both the toolbar button and the settings page.
  • A new tab page you set up yourself. Shortcut tiles are drawn from the sites you visit most, alongside a starting set you can edit, add to, or trim.
  • Story shelves. Headlines grouped into categories including Popular, Technology, Business, Entertainment, Sports, Science, Health, Food, Travel, Money, and World. Keep the ones you read and switch off the rest.
  • Themes that follow you. Choose automatic, light, or dark for the new tab page. Automatic matches whatever your system is already set to.
WHO IT IS FOR
  • Readers who want news and article pages to stay readable, without ad blocks breaking up the text.
  • Anyone who watches a lot of video and would rather not sit through ad breaks.
  • People who want to support specific sites while filtering everywhere else, and who want that choice to take one click rather than a trip through settings.
  • Anyone who opens a lot of new tabs and would like something more useful than a blank page.
PRIVACY

Filtering is handled by your browser's own request blocking, so Ad Cleanser does not need to read the content of the pages you visit in order to block ads on them. Your allowed sites and pages, your theme, and your new tab preferences are stored in your browser. The first time you open Ad Cleanser you get a short setup screen where you make your data collection choice, and you can reopen that screen from the settings page whenever you want.

Ad Cleanser also offers its own web search. Firefox shows you its own prompt about this when you install the add-on, and that choice is yours to accept or decline.

Quieter pages, a cleaner new tab, and a one click exception whenever you want one.
