AlterNote Editor

An alternative implementation of the tinyMCE WYSIWYG editor for the Evernote web client.

AlterNote Editor is a powerful Chrome extension that significantly enhances the Evernote web client by providing advanced WYSIWYG editing features missing from the default interface. It allows users to directly view and edit HTML source code, insert footnotes or sidenotes, and customize table and list formats. Features like image property editing, including rotation, and collapsing nested lists give users greater control over note formatting.

With AlterNote Editor, you can create local backups, add quick links to other notes, and insert the current date and time effortlessly. The extension supports editing convenience with first-line indenting using the tab key and case-changing options for selected text. It seamlessly integrates with Evernote, saving changes back to Evernote's servers and ensuring synchronization across devices. Additionally, it optimizes system performance by running only when editor windows are open. This extension is ideal for users seeking a more robust and customizable Evernote web editing experience.

User reviews

AlterNote Editor is highly praised for vastly improving the Evernote editing experience, offering robust formatting tools and a user-friendly interface, especially benefiting Chromebook and Linux users. However, consistent issues include lack of support for the Chinese version of Evernote, occasional syncing and note update problems, no auto-saving, and limited ongoing updates. Users want the addition of dark mode and worry about the extension's future maintenance. Overall, it's seen as an essential upgrade to Evernote's default editor for many users, despite some functional gaps.
Pros
  • Provides a much better editing experience than Evernote's default web editor, with more formatting options and features.
  • Easy to use, responsive interface that improves note listing and searching.
  • Supports productivity for users relying on Chromebooks or Linux by offering a desktop-like Evernote experience.
  • Enables advanced formatting such as footnotes/endnotes that aren't available in Evernote's default editor.
  • Widely appreciated by Evernote users who want precise control over note style and layout.
Cons
  • Lacks support for the Chinese Evernote domain 'yinxiang.com', leading to connectivity issues for some users.
  • Some stability and syncing problems reported, such as notes not updating correctly after editing or saving.
  • Limited ongoing development or feature updates, causing concerns about future support.
  • No auto-save feature; users must manually save notes, increasing the risk of data loss.
  • Missing optional dark theme for better usability at night.

I've just started using again after I got my Chromebook. It really is the interface Evernote should be imho. Easy to use, responsive, and also enable proper (in my view) searching and LISTING of notes....I really don't like the Evernote Chromebook/Web experience and this get over a lot of that. Main concern is that not a lot happens with it - I don't want to get invested and then it be dropped.
