User reviews

Users appreciate that Mailto: for Gmail™ lets mailto links open directly in Gmail, offering a simple and effective way to avoid default mail clients. It generally works well on Chrome and Chromium-based browsers like Brave and Vivaldi on Windows 10. However, issues include intermittent failures, needed manual configuration, problems with local file links, and minor bugs like persistent menu icons. Overall, it is valued for its core functionality but has occasional reliability and usability drawbacks.
Pros
  • Enables mailto links to open in Gmail instead of default mail clients like Apple Mail or Windows Mail app.
  • Simple to use and effective once set up properly.
  • Works well on Chrome and compatible browsers like Brave and Vivaldi, especially on Windows 10.
  • Allows opening compose windows in new tabs or windows as desired.
  • Helps avoid native mail apps opening, which users find annoying.
Cons
  • Some users report that the extension stops working after browser updates or over time.
  • Issues with handling mailto links in local files or certain environments.
  • Requires restarting the browser and sometimes manual default app/protocol settings adjustments for proper functioning.
  • Some confusion or frustration with settings or options required, e.g., Workspace Domain for Google Workspace users.
  • Bug with persistent menu bar icon that doesn't uninstall properly reported.

Spent about an hour trying to research ways to fix my browser to open a compose email tab properly upon clicking a mail to link. I wanted to do this by just adjusting gmail or chrome settings, but the handler once I found it didn't have anything I could actually adjust. Ridiculous that two products from the same company don't integrate better. It was google workspace so maybe that's why. Anyway, I finally found a suggestion to try this extension, and now five minutes later I have the functionality I was looking for. Yay!
